Painted by Esther The Blueprint Behind “Transition Blush:
The beauty industry loves innovation, but behind many viral trends are creators, often Black creators, whose artistry shapes the culture long before the mainstream catches up. Right now, conversations surrounding “transition blush” have sparked larger discussions about creative credit, visibility, and who truly gets recognized for influencing beauty trends. At the center of the conversation is Ngozi Esther Edeme, professionally known as Painted by Esther, a beauty creator and makeup artist whose signature blush artistry has inspired thousands online for years. Her seamless gradient blush placement and editorial complexion work, especially on deeper skin tones, helped redefine how many beauty lovers approached blush application altogether. Her work stood out because it felt artistic, intentional, and innovative.
Recently, many beauty lovers began raising concerns after similarities were noticed between Painted by Esther’s long standing blush artistry and the release of a new “transition blush” concept by celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta. Social media quickly filled with conversations about whether Black creators are properly acknowledged when their artistry inspires mainstream beauty trends. And honestly, this conversation is bigger than blush.
Black creators have continuously shaped beauty, fashion, music, and culture for generations. Yet too often, trends become profitable only after they are repackaged, renamed, or introduced to larger audiences by others. Meanwhile, the original creators are left fighting for recognition, visibility, and ownership.
That’s why so many people connected emotionally to this moment. It reflects a frustration many Black creatives know all too well: watching innovation inspire industries without receiving the same opportunities or acknowledgment in return.
Of course, inspiration exists within all art forms. But there is a difference between influence and erasure. Credit matters. Recognition matters. And protecting creative innovation matters too.
Painted by Esther represents so many creators who continue to move beauty culture forward through pure talent, originality, and vision. And regardless of where the conversation goes from here, one thing is clear: the originators deserve their flowers while they can still receive them.
Today, we celebrate Ngozi Esther Edeme, also known as Painted by Esther, for the artistry, inspiration, and impact she continues to bring to the beauty community.
